NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct, 25 – Two people were Sunday killed in a clash between two groups over a piece of land in Kayole area, Nairobi.
Police and witnesses said a group of goons armed with crude weapons had invaded the piece of land claiming ownership as they chased guards on duty from the property.
The group of about 100 burnt down structures on the land and in the process hacked to death two men who were therein.
Many escaped the attack, witnesses said.
Those killed were identified as Joshua Maingi Kilele, 38 and Shamila Lontorol, 25.
Also, Daniel Gathiani who was among the goons was injured on the shoulder with an arrow, police said adding he was taken to Mama Lucy Kibaki hospital while the bodies of the deceased were taken to the same hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.
Police who responded to the scene said they arrested 11 people and recovered several crude weapons.
A motor vehicle, which was being used to ferry goons was also intercepted.
Police said they would charge the suspects in court with among others murder, arson as they hunt for more who were involved in the barbaric act.
The detectives handling the case said the suspects were incited to invade the land.
Police say there has been an increase of cases of invasion of private land in the city.
“The trespassers argue they can negotiate with the genuine owners. But we will keep fighting this impunity,” said one officer aware of the trend.
He said the incidents have been reported in Kayole area, Njiru, Mlolongo and Donholm and warned of dire action on the trespassers.
Some of the victims have reported the incidents to authorities but no action was taken. They accused the authorities of complicity and urged for urgent action to stop the trend.
