NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 9 – The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) peace mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) will cost Kenyan taxpayers over Sh4 billion.
These revelations were made during a motion moved to Parliament seeking its approval to send 903 troops to DRC.
The Defence and Foreign Relations committee which is chaired by Belgut MP Nelson Koech recommended the approval of sending the troops and sought the support of the House.
Speaking during the debate of the motion Koech said that good bilateral relations between the two countries are what saw Kenya send her troops to the country.
“The Kenya Army is anticipating in an event that their stay will spill over for one year, then the cost will rise to between Ksh5.5 billion to Ksh.6 billion,” he said.
The decision to send troops to DRC was arrived upon by the National Security Council on July 7, 2022, but had to have approval by the National Assembly.
The move came after members of the East African Community (EAC) reached an agreement in April to set up a joint force that will fight militia groups in the eastern part of Congo.
President William Ruto officiated a ceremony for the Kenyan troops heading to Congo on November 2, where they are expected to stay for six months.
