NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 29 – Cabinet has okayed a plan by Moderna Inc to set up a vaccine and pharmaceutical plant in Kenya.
The resolution was made in a meeting held on Tuesday, November 29, 2022, that was chaired by President William Ruto.
“The plant will produce vaccines and other pharmaceuticals for domestic consumption as well as export to continental and global markets,” a dispatch from cabinet says.
Cabinet also resolved to postpone the import of maize to February 2023 and the imports will enjoy a tax waiver.
According to the dispatch Kenyan farmers are expected to harvest 30 million bags and they will be given the first priority to sell to government. Kenya needs 45 million to satisfy her needs hence move to import more corn.
Farmers will purchase subsidized fertilizer at Sh3,500, which is expected to bring down the cost of production.
A Cholera vaccination programme will be launched to fight an outbreak that has affected Nairobi, Machakos, Garissa, Kiambu, Muranga, Kajiado, Nakuru and Uasin Gishu counties.
