NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 20 – A 22-year-old musician Collins Kipleting Serem who was today arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts for impersonating Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua will remain in custody for seven days.
Kipleting alias Rengstar, a benga artist based in Kamplemur village in Sugoi, was arrested over the weekend in Eldoret after he created a fake Facebook account bearing the Deputy President’s name and obtained money from unsuspecting Kenyans, allegedly meant for feeding Kenyans facing hunger.
The prosecution said seven days were enough to enable them to complete investigations into the incident.
He is said to have published a paybill number connected to an account at Eldoret’s Standard Chartered bank and appealed to his over 14,000 followers to come together and raise funds for the victims of hunger, promising God’s blessings to those who would heed to the appeal.
Police attached to the Deputy President’s office launched a manhunt for the suspect and arrested him in Sugoi, Uasin Gishu county.
