NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 13 – A Nairobi Court has set free four Police Officers who had been arrested for attempting to rob Sh2 million from a Forex Bureau businessman.

The prosecution team told the court that they did not have evidence linking the four officers to the alleged crime.

While releasing the officers, Milimani Chief Magistrate Bernard Ochoi ordered that their phones which had been confiscated by investigators returned to them.

An enquiry file is expected to be opened to probe the conduct of the officers and have it dealt with administratively.

The four Daniel Wambua Mthini, Eliud Kipkurui Bor, Nicholas Murira and Stanley Gitonga, were arraigned in court on Tuesday, with the prosecution accusing them of attempting to rob Hassan Abdi Omar of Sh2 million.

Omar is said to have withdrawn the money from ABSA bank along Mama Ngina street and was headed to the bureau together with a colleague Mohammed Hassan when they were confronted by the four.

They introduced themselves as Police Officers, saying they were after Omar, they raised alarm and a guard and a manager of a nearby forex bureau took the money and Omar was taken into their car.

Administration Police Officers who were guarding a Forex Bureau nearby responded to the call for help and the four suspects identified themselves as officers and withdrew.

A report to the Police about the arrest of Omar was made, which led to the interception of the car within Muthaiga. The four officers said that they were taking Omar to the DCI headquarters.

The prosecution had asked for seven days to conclude investigations into the incident. Milimani Senior Principal Magistrate Bernard Ochoi granted them three days instead, ordering them to appear in court on Friday, January 13.
