NAIROBI Kenya May 18 -A woman was on Thursday, May 18, charged in court with impersonating an advocate.
The court heard that Faith Yvonne Shakila had been masquerading as Miriam Bikeyo who is a reaseracher at the Judiciary.
Shakila was among the four people who were arrested on May 17 during a crackdown on quack lawyers and was presented before senior principal Magistrate Monica Maroro.
She denied the charges.
She was charged that on May 12, 2023 at Kibera Law Courts area in Kibra Sub-County in Nairobi she was found pretending and practicing as an advocate despite being aware that she was not qualified to practice.
Shakila was remanded awaiting her bond ruling application on May 24.
The suspect had been arrested by the rapid action team of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) Nairobi branch after they received information on May 12 that someone was masquerading as an advocate at Kibera Law Courts.
The police investigation report indicated that during an interrogation by the detectives, the suspect initially identified herself as ‘Miriam Bikeyo’.
After the arrest the LSK members and police managed to get hold of the real ‘Miriam Bikeyo’ who later recorded a statement.
It was then established that the suspect was impersonating an advocate who is currently a researcher at the Judiciary.
“The suspect’s true particulars of identity are Faith Yvonne Shakila and is a known notorious masquerader in various courts within the city using our colleague’s good name and has been defrauding unsuspecting members of the public,” the police report reads.
