OGEMBO Kenya May 22 -Eight people were on Monday, May 22, charged before Ogembo Law Corts with assaulting two healthcare workers at Nduru Level Four hospital in South Mugirango constituency.
The eight were further accused of malicious damage to a vehicle, a Toyota Hilux registration number GKB 034Z, belonging to the Kisii County Government.
Two of them -Nathan Merongo and Josphat Miruka -were further charged with robbery with violence, where they were accused of robbing Kelvin Mutonga and Peter Mangesa of mobile phones valued at Sh55,000 and Sh11,000 respectively.
Cleophas Mokua, Charles Nyakundi, Nicholas Anyona, Justus Nyabuto, Kelvin Mandela, Calen Ososi were also charged with taking part in a protest at Nduru Level Four Hospital in South Mugirango, Kisii County, which is contrary to section 80 of the penal code.
The accused persons willfully and unlawfully damaging an office door belonging to the Kisii County Government.
The eight assaulted Kelvin Mutonga and Mangesa Peter, resulting in actual bodily harm. The charges for these acts fall under section 251 of the penal code.
The accused persons pleaded not guilty to the charges before Senior Principal Magistrate Paul Biwott and were released on a Sh100,000 each or a cash bail of Sh20,000.
The hospital in South Mugirango was closed on April 12 following an attack that left three medics and a driver injured.
The locals claimed they were opposed to the relocation of medical equipment by some senior medical staff in the county government.
Area MP Sylvanus Osoro however said those who were attacked were thieves, and that the residents were only protecting the hospital equipment from being stolen.
