NAIROBI Kenya, June 14 -Police on June 14 arrested Samuel Ndungo Waweru in connection with a viral video in which he was captured robbing a female foreigner of her sling bag.
The robbery along Ngong Road on June 1 at around 2.40pm was captured on CCTV cameras, prompting a manhunt by the detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI)
Waweru and his two accomplices were riding on a motorcycle before he alighted and snatched the bag before joining his colleagues and rode away.
According to the DCI, the well-coordinated gang targets pedestrians on the walkways and is believed to be operating from a house off Jogoo Road near Mogas petrol station.
A special team from the DCI conducted and intelligence-led surveillance that led to the arrest.
“His accomplices have since been identified and put on police radar as their manhunt continues,” the DCI said.
The arrest came just two days after DCI detectives shot dead four other robbery suspects in Kilifi and recovered one of the AK47 rifles that was robbed of officers during the July 2021 Equity Matuu Branch raid recovered
One of the slain suspects, Festus Mutisya Kaloki alias Kamwana was recently released on bond from court where he was charged with several counts of robbery, including robbery at Economy Way Supermarket at Manoni, Kiembeni on February 26 this year.
Kaloki and his accomplice had also been captured on CCTV robbing an Mpesa shop in Kiembeni Mombasa before they escaped using a motorcycle.
In a well-planned covert operation, detectives from the DCI headquarters commenced surveillance of Kaloki after reports indicated that he was armed with the AK47 rifle that was being used in several robberies in Kwale, Machakos, Mombasa and other areas.
