Kisii Kenya October 3-Kisii Woman rep Dorice Aburi has advised residents in Kisii to harvest and store plenty of water during this rainy season.
While launching a water project of sinking boreholes in the nine sub counties to cushion women and girls from water crises during the dry season, the women rep said there is need for everyone to harvest and store water for future use since the weather patterns are unpredictable due to climate change
Speaking at Tabaka ward in South Mugirango constituency Mrs Aburi said water scarcity is one of the biggest challenges women in this region are facing with improper water harvesting strategies and immediately after the rains are over, women are forced to run downstream to fetch water for home use.
The woman rep noted the borehole will reduce water scarcity in the county and women and girls will focus on other economic activities and concentrate in their studies for they will not be traveling for kilometers to search for water down the streams.
“yes we have the rains but we don’t have water, we need water storage vessels and create awareness on the importance of saving this water,” said the woman rep.
Donya emphasized that these boreholes would provide the community with access to clean water for domestic use, addressing the chronic water shortage they had been facing.
She pointed out that during drought seasons, incidents of rape, underage pregnancies, and defilement were frequently reported because girls and women had to journey long distances in search of water.

Jimmy Kenyanya, a member of the county assembly from Tabaka, expressed that the boreholes would supply water not only to students but also to the local communities.
“This water would also be channeled to nearby markets through pipes, eliminating the need for pupils to carry water containers to school,” he said.
Kenyanya celebrated the end of the era where residents had to walk long distances to fetch water, particularly during drought seasons.
He encouraged residents to utilize this water for farming since they no longer needed to travel long distances to fetch it.
