Kisii Woman Representative Dorice Aburi has asked parents to take care of their children in playing their parental role during the April holidays to curb teen pregnancies and drug abuse among school going children.
Aburi said parents should monitor their children activities and the companies they keep to ensure that they spend their time in meaningful and constructive activities.
Speaking in Kisii, Aburi said parents should initiate conversations with their children and guide them on the kind of friends and companies they should engage with.
“We have so many cases of teen pregnancies and this has made lives of these parents miserable, making them work extra hard to provide for the teens and their babies,” said Aburi.
The Woman Rep noted that there was a surge in teen pregnancies, and there was an urgent need for the parents to caution their children against the dangers of premarital sex and drug and substance abuse.
The students have also been advised to concentrate on their studies and also help parents with house chores instead of involving themselves in bad companies in the villages and estates.
“Parents must guide their children on ways to effectively navigate the negative temptations that come with the festive season,” she added.
With the schools closed for Easter holidays, parents are likely to grapple with a fresh wave of juvenile delinquency.
