KIAMBU Kenya May 14 -Detectives have arrested a 25-year-old student from Tom Mboya University in connection with the murder of his girlfriend, Faith Musembi, on the night of May 8.

David Kioko was arrested after preliminary investigations linked him to the murder of the girlfriend who was eight months pregnant at the time of her death. It is suspected that Kioko killed her over alleged infidelity.

Ms Musembi 19 and a first-year student at Mt. Kenya University (MKU) main campus was found dead in her rented room at Pilot Estate in Thika on May 8

Thika police boss Lawrence Muchangi confirmed the arrest and said he was being grilled before being arraigned.

An autopsy conducted at the Thika General Kago Funeral Home indicated that she succumbed due to excessive bleeding.

The deceased father had earlier said they received a call from an unknown individual demanding a ransom of Sh20,000 for the release of their daughter. The caller was using the deceased’s phone.

The family sent the money and proceeded to Thika where they reported the matter to the police but they were reluctant to investigate the matter.

Musembi said that his wife hurriedly sent the money for the sake of their daughter’s safety, as he left for Thika to pursue the matter.

They then went to the campus and later to her rented house the following day where they found her lifeless body lying on the bed.

The country has witnessed an increase in intimate partner killings, with at least four cases reported in the last one week.

Most of these killings and violence are perpetrated by men who are in family or intimate partner relationships.

In another case on May 9, popular Ohangla fan Sheila Odoyo was also found murdered in her matrimonial bed at their residence in Hill View estate, Athi River Machakos County.

The body was in a pool of blood with a deep cut on the throat, according to the Athi River Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss Wesley Langat.

“There were signs of struggle in the bedroom. We are treating the husband as a person of interest. We are however yet to recover the murder weapon,” another detective said.

Langat said the husband, Jackson Bambo 45, is suspected to have killed the wife before escaping to Migori county.

Bambo left the house at around 1am and drove the family car, a Mitsubishi Outlander registration number KDM 798M, to Nairobi city centre and left the car at a parking spot near Kencom, Moi Avenue at around 2.30am.

He gave the parking attendant Sh450 and left with three bags towards Afya Centre along Tom Mboya street.

“Preliminary investigations show that Bambo could have left the house after the killing. We strongly believe the husband is the suspect in this murder,” a senior detective said.

His last phone signals were traced to Narok on Thursday at around 6.26 am before the phone was switched off.

He has not been traced even at his rural home, about 1 kilometre from Uriri town in Migori County.
